Indoor vs outdoor photos sessions for kids

Indoor vs outdoor photos sessions for kids

I have been photographing this sweet little gal since she was 9 months old and she is a ray of sunshine! So far we had only done indoor photos sessions but we did the session outdoors since it is unlikely a child this age will sit still in the studio for a long time.

Outdoor photo sessions offers a lot of opportunities to capture posed and candid photos and kids have fun running around, chasing bubbles, throwing rocks in the river and playing with whatever is available in the area.

Outdoor sessions are magical and great for small children. Here are some pros and cons to outdoor photo sessions: Pros: Beautiful lighting, beautiful natural backdrops, perfect for small children who feel confined in a studio. With a large area to explore we can also get a variety of backdrops. Cons: Outdoor sessions have to be done early in the morning or later in the evening to capture the best lighting. The weather in Calgary is unpredictable so there is a chance we would have to reschedule due to rain, hail or snow.

Indoor sessions offer predictability since we don’t have to worry about weather and unstable lighting. Downsides are the lack of room for toddlers to move about and the most backdrops you can get is 2.

This photo shoot was done around 10am at Stanley Park in Calgary. She loved the bubble machine so much!

I love how the flowers highlight the innocence and wildness of childhood and her exuberant personality shines through to steal the show.
