Nature inspired cake smash

Cake smashes are quickly becoming my favourite photo sessions. One year old’s are at a great age where they can sit sturdily, stand and possibly walk a bit. They are also starting to become full of personality. That being said, you never know how they will react to a photo shoot. Being in a strangers studio, getting photographed by a stranger, and being presented with a food they may have never eaten before are all scary to a small child. Add in covid stuff, like a masked stranger, the possibility they haven’t seen many people since the pandemic started, limited people being able to attend the session, and you have a recipe for a crying baby.

Little Agneev woke up from his sound sleep in my studio with me in my mask staring at him. At first he was understandably a bit freaked out. But I stood at the top of my stairs while he and his mom remained at the bottom so I could take off my mask and play peek-a-boo without my mask. Once he saw my smiling face he relaxed a bit. His mama also worked hard to engage him and get him used to the room. Before we knew it he was exploring the backdrop and ready for the cake.

Boy did he love the cake! He dived in, enjoying every sensation and even put his face right in there too. Overall this was a success! I’m glad he enjoyed the experience and his family has some cute photos to last a lifetime.

Setting up for this was fun, I love to create. I can take any of my basic backdrops and then add in props to put together a theme. I used my brown floor drop, white brick backdrop, and then ordered greenery to drape in the background. Gold and white balloons, an outfit from Zara and a beautiful cake brought the look together.
